Your skin care basics

The variations between men’s and women’s skin begins in the structure of the skin’s fat layer and dermis, which houses blood vessels, oil glands and the growing part of the hair, among other things. Men have thicker skin than women because of the hormone testosterone and thicker skin ages more slowly.

Skin type refers to whether your skin is oily, oil dry, water dry (dehydrated) or a combination of these. Regardless of your skin tone or type, a little care goes a long way.

Cleansing is vital to remove make up and to clear the skin of city grime and dust. You should cleanse your skin morning and night. (Look back at an earlier blog of mine about microfibre cloths and cleansing)

Toners are vital for removing any residue of cleanser, which may be left on the skin. It helps to close the pores after any treatment, like cleansing or masks and prepares the skin for any further treatment, like moisturising. I put a tiny amount of toner into my hand after cleansing and just splash it onto my skin. I find it very effective, not to mention the saving on cotton wool and I don’t waste any toner because the cotton wool has absorbed most of it.

Moisturisers are essential because they lock moisture into the skin and help to prevent and combat dryness. Dehydrated and dry skin can cause premature aging and wrinkles. Remember to also use a high factor sunblock every morning to protect against the burning sun to prevent skin cancer, sun damage, premature aging and pigmentation.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and stimulates the superficial circulation to give the skin a healthy glow. It may also help in the prevention of the formation of blackheads and should be done once or twice a week after cleansing.

Facepacks or Masks are used to deep clean the skin, improve circulation, nourish and heal the skin. This can also be done once or twice a week after cleansing and exfoliation and before using a moisturiser.
